Physical Therapy

Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants work with people who, because of physical or developmental problems, need specialized assistance to maximize movement and function, relieve pain, and heal wounds. A Registered Physical Therapist defines a safe treatment plan customized toward meeting an individual’s specific needs. Treatment may include mobilizing stiff joints, relaxing tight tissues, exercising/stretching muscles, heat, ice, recommending adaptive equipment, and/or educating the patient and family to optimize long term prevention or re-injury.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long is the first appointment?
The initial appointment is usually the longest from 1 to 1.5 hours because our physical therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine the extent of the patient’s challenges. Typically, after the initial evaluation, treatment sessions last 30 – 45 minutes depending upon the complexity of the diagnosis and treatment.
How long will patients need physical therapy?
Each individual’s case is different; therefore, the length of time needed in therapy treatment depends upon what the individual needs to gain maximal independence. On the first visit, the therapist will discuss, with the patient, treatment concepts and how long they may expect to be in therapy. Generally speaking, outpatients are seen 2 to 3 times per week for a 3 to 12 week period.
How should patients prepare for the first appointment?
Because there is paperwork to be filled out at the first visit, a patient should arrive 15 minutes earlier than the scheduled appointment time. The patient will need to bring a copy of their current insurance card and a physician signed prescription. The prescription should include a proposed frequency, duration, diagnosis, and any special instructions and/or precautions that may apply. We recommend wearing comfortable attire and a good pair of walking shoes.
