Each quarter, the Oklahoma Hospital Association (OHA) analyzes patient satisfaction information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS - pronounced “H-caps”) information that is being analyzed is gathered from every hospital in the United States and it measures the frequency of favorable experiences for hospital inpatients.
Share Medical Center just received its report for patients surveyed between October 1, 2007 and September 30, 2008. The OHA report compares Share Medical Center to ninety-five Oklahoma hospitals as well as the top ten percent of U.S. hospitals.
These survey results are reported by frequency of favorable responses to ten patient satisfaction experiences on a scale of 1 to 4. For this survey, a favorable response is a “4” which translates to “always” or “definitely”.
In looking at the OHA report, Share is one of the best hospitals in the United States for patient experience. In each of the ten HCAHPS categories, Share is in the number one ranked tier for all U.S. hospitals. The reporting doesn’t indicate the actual U.S. ranking, but to be in the top tier is quite an achievement.
The report also concludes that Share is one of the top five ranked Oklahoma hospitals in seven out of ten HCAHPS categories; in three of those seven, Share holds the best rank, number one. This isn’t a top tier ranking; this is Share’s actual rank, number one out of 95 hospitals.
Share ranks best in Oklahoma in the following areas:
- Patients who reported their doctors always communicated well,
- Patients who reported they always received help quickly from staff,
- Patients who reported their pain was always well controlled.
When compared to the rest of the state and the country, Share Medical Center is clearly excelling when it comes to the patients’ experiences. Share Marketing Director, Kelly Parker commented, “Anytime we can have a single-digit rank in the state, we’re happy.”
Even with these great achievements, Share is still striving for better. “If we can be the best in some of these HCAHPS scores, there is no reason we can’t be the best in all of them,” states Share CEO, Barbara Oestmann, “that’s what we’re striving for.”
