Walter S. Cherry, M.D.
Dr. Cherry received his medical education at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where his sisters, Elizabeth and Alice, received their M.D. degrees. Dr. Cherry practiced medicine in Alva from 1920-25 when he moved to California.
Daniel B. Ensor, M.D.
Dr. Daniel B. Ensor received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee. He also completed graduate work at Johns Hopkins University, the Mayo Clinic, and the University of Grenoble in France. Dr. Ensor came to Oklahoma to resume the practice of Dr. L.R. Linney at Hopeton, Oklahoma. After service as an officer with the 77th in France and with the Lost Battalion of the 306th Infantry, Dr. Ensor returned to Hopeton in 1919 to resume his practice. He was President of the Hopeton State Bank for over 20 years. In 1932 he became Chief of Staff at the Alva General Hospital and remained in that position until his death in 1962.
Howard Bankes Ames, M.D.
Dr. Howard Ames graduated from the Keokuk School of Medicine, Keokuk, Iowa, where he specialized in obstetrics and children’s diseases. He also took refresher courses at Tulane University and Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Ames practiced medicine in Alva for sixteen years, from 1918 until his death in 1934. He served for a time as city and county health officer. His office was located in the Monfort Building on the west side of the square.
I.F. Stephenson, M.D.
Dr. I.F. Stephenson entered Oklahoma University in 1923 for pre-medical study. In 1925 he enrolled in the University Medical School and received his M.D. degree in 1929.

Dr. Stephenson took both his internship and residency at St. Anthony’s hospital in Oklahoma City during the years 1928-31. In July of 1931 he began his practice in Alva and has since faithfully served the community as a general physician and surgeon. Responsibilities in the 1930’s were great because of the years of depression and war, but he met the challenges of that period in the same manner that he met those since.
Clifford Austin Traverse, M.D.
Dr. Clifford Traverse received his pre-medical training at Northwestern State College and at Oklahoma University. From the University he received both his B.S. and M.D. degrees. He took his internship there also, and at the Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. Post-graduate courses were taken at Mayo Clinic and the Cook County and American Hospitals in Chicago. He holds a degree of Fellow International College of Surgeons.

Dr. Traverse practiced in Alva from 1934-1968 and closed his practice here in 1968 and moved to Oklahoma City.
William E. Simon, M.D.
Dr. William E. Simon received his medical degree from the Kansas University School of Medicine in 1912. In 1914 he served as resident physician at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. In 1915 he moved to Alva and formed a partnership with his friend Dr. A.E. Hale. In 1918 both doctors entered the armed services. Not long afterwards, Dr. Simon was gassed and wounded for which service he was presented the Reward for Valor.

In June, 1919 Dr. Simon returned to his practice in Alva where he became well known throughout the area, devoting his time to an extensive practice, and also serving as chief surgeon at Alva General Hospital.
William LaFon, M.D.
Dr. LaFon practiced medicine in Alva about 1940-1943 after coming here from Waynoka. He served in World War II and remained in the service after the war.
Joe D. Warrick, M.D.
Dr. Joe Warrick received his pre-medical education at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee; his internship at Inglewood Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, and his post-graduate at Boston Psychiatric Hospital. Dr. Warrick spent only a shot time, 1937-1938, in Alva. While here he served on the Alva Hospital Staff.
